Have you always dreamed of keeping pigs?
Here at The Rushbury Pig I am passionate about my pigs and hope to encourage a lot more of you to realise your dreams in a fulfilling but well thought through and informed way! I am a qualified teacher with years of experience of both teaching and working with a variety of farm livestock and pets and aim to offer the new pig keeper or returning pig keeper the chance to come on a course tailored to their specific needs.
The courses offered by The Rushbury Pig cover a range of needs: from the person/couple or family who want to keep a pig as a pet or who are not sure whether pigs are really for them; to those who wish to get started straight away producing pork and bacon.
The courses I run cater for one to two people or a family group of upto 5 people as I feel people get far more from a more individual/ small group experience and personally I enjoy delivering my courses this way..
I keep my pigs on a small scale in my back garden and a small amount of woodland and pasture. You will get the opportunity to see what it is really like to keep pigs in your own back garden or on a working Smallholding. You will also have a chance to learn from my mistakes and experiences. You will get plenty of opportunities for hands on experience including, weight measuring, moving pigs with a pig board and ear tagging and injecting if there are weaners needing this. The realities of keeping pigs are not glossed over!
I aim to run smaller, more personal courses that are tailored to your needs, which enable you to find out what it's really like to keep pigs and help you decide whether it is a sustainable and enjoyable life that is really for you. During your course you will get lots of opportunities to discuss your personal set up, ideas and needs and you are supported in taking that first step and then beyond as your piggy adventure continues.
We also offer the chance to learn about breeding either in simple terms just to find out if it’s something you might like to do or as a workshop which looks at breeding in more detail. If you can’t find something that fits what you are looking for then please contact me to discuss your needs.
I have now run several of my ‘Pig Courses’ as birthday presents or anniversary presents for a partner, relative or close friend to help people to decide if a lifelong desire to have pigs is really for them. This can be simply a fun session meeting the pigs or a more comprehensive session learning about how to keep pigs. I can arrange for free handmade ‘pig’ cards and vouchers tailored to your needs to be sent through the post for such occasions and can provide a cake and suitable refreshments at extra cost. Please ask for further information.
We are based in the West Midlands surrounded
by the stunning hills and dales of South Shropshire. It is a beautiful place to visit and many people decide to stay for the weekend
when they sign up for one of our courses. We are only 20 miles from Shrewsbury, 15 miles from Ludlow, 10 miles from Much Wenlock and
6 miles from Church Stretton, so there are many great places to stay and eat; you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice! I am currently
making a new web page to help you make a choice should you choose to stay for a weekend.
Access is good being only 20 miles off the M54. A Google map link is provided on the The Rushbury Pig Contact page. Your Sat Nav will get you to within 200 metres of The Rushbury Pig if you approach from Rushbury so be warned – keep going to the top of Roman Bank! If you come from the Ludlow/Bridgnorth road it will take you passed our house down Roman Bank into Rushbury so turn around and follow the earlier advice!
